Kalamazoo Nature Center Announces Major Land Donation from Kalamazoo Native Jon Stryker

KALAMAZOO, MI.  (Aug. 17, 2015)
The Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) announced today that it will receive a generous donation of land from Kalamazoo native and global philanthropist Jon Stryker.

The gift  includes a 22-acre plot running along the West Fork of Portage Creek in Kalamazoo, and borders the grounds of Kalamazoo Nature Centers Natures Way Preschool facility, located on nine acres off Oakland Drive at Kilgore.

“We are excited and grateful for this generous gift from Jon Stryker and the opportunities it will provide for the community,” said Bill Rose, KNC’s President and CEO. “It is especially fitting that the land was originally owned by Dr. H. Lewis Batts, Jr. and his wife Jean, two of the founders of KNC. Jon Stryker purchased the land from the Batts estate and is now gifting it to KNC, bringing it full-circle, with the knowledge that it will be restored and preserved for generations to come.”

In addition to the land donation, Stryker has committed to a 2-to-1 matching grant of up to $700,000 that will go toward a proposed educational facility on the site along with other renovations and on-going maintenance costs of the property.
